Efficient Multi-Channel/Multi-Screen Video Encoding

Up to 48 transcoded channels in a single 1 RU chassis is what Transparent Video System’s latest encoder offers. TVS’ encoder is ideal for multi-screen encoding, where resolution requirements range from high-definition to smart phone. Efficient compression is another highlight of this device. The modular nature of the physical interface of the unit provides for flexible input/output combinations which include, ASI, GigE, HDMI and HD-SDI. Its low power consumption and compact size make it perfect for the data-center or the headend.

In the above interview, TVS president and CEO, Norman Gillaspie, describes an application whereby off-air channels, encoded at approximately 20 Mb/s, proved too much for the CPUs of legacy HD-DVR, IPTV set-top boxes. The TVS solution transcoded these channels to approximately 6 Mb/s, allowing the set-tops to record and stream multiple programs.

He describes another application where the transcoder can serve as a way to use the public Internet for signal transport, a huge cost-savings over traditional satellite and fixed bandwidth techniques. The same encoders allow for transcoding to lower-bit rate profiles for the support of tablets, smart phones and PCs, at a cost point that is 1/5 the cost of comparable encoders.
