Where Technology Meets People – Tom Coughlin on #CES2024 and the IEEE

Tom Coughlin, current IEEE President & CEO, discusses the importance of developing technology to improve the human condition. In this interview, filmed at CES Unveiled, Coughlin highlights some of the technologies he saw. These technologies focus on improving the quality of life.1

Coughlin brings a people-centric view of technology to his role as the head of the IEEE. The fundamental strength of the IEEE is around its people. It is an organization of 460k+ people from 190 countries. Its mission is “advancing technology for the benefit of humanity.”

With 39 societies, 276 publications, and 124 technical communities, the IEEE covers all aspects of technology. The IEEE also includes non-engineers, like doctors, chemists, physicists, and lawyers.

Finally, he talks about the importance of young members in maintaining the organization’s vitality and relevance. This is something near and dear to Coughlin as he is a long-time supporter of the IEEE’s Rising Stars program.
