The Story on the Intel Supercomputer – Part 14

Computer historian Roy Mize asks “what ever happened to Intel’s supercomputers.”  Dave says Intel always had a research activity, headed by Justin Rattner (now Intel CTO).  That group developed a hyper-cube supercomputer – composed of multiple microprocessors- that was sold to the government.  Intel is now out of that business.  Dave was still at Intel when they shipped their last super computer (1995-96?).  He said he didn’t see the money in a new generation for that business.  He reiterated that companies should not fall in love with their strategies, or else they will fail.  [This year, Intel has indicated it would make chips for super-computers in data centers, but not build those machines.
