A Holistic Approach to Home Management

At the 2013 Smart Energy Summit, Kevin Meagher gave the scoop on Lowe’s home management system, Iris. In the above interview, Meagher talks about the motivation for Iris, what makes Iris unique and how they are using this cloud-platform to learn how people will interact with a managed home. As the first national retailer to offer this type of service, Lowes is a pioneer in the home management space.

Lowes is taking a holistic approach offering security and home energy management; one that includes all the devices necessary for monitoring and control. Based on a freemium model, a consumer can buy the individual components and for an additional monthly fee, their cloud-based service ties the components together and adds intelligence and rules between the various piece components.

He also discusses their partnership role with Verizon Wireless, which is particularly interesting given Verizon’s own home control initiatives. As he indicates in the above interview, it is still early and Lowes is learning how best to package and market this service. Lowes is an announced speaker/sponsor of the 2014 Smart Energy Summit, which will be well-timed for Lowes to provide an update on their findings.
