Back then, the idea of a belt deploying emergency cushions in real time to soften a human fall sounded almost like science fiction. Fast-forward to CES 2026, and that visionary concept has officially matured into a commercially available, life-saving reality.

Fast Airbags and Controlled Deflation

Unlike smartwatches or pendants worn around the wrist or neck, the Smart Hip Guardian sits right around the hips like a lightweight fanny pack. Weighing under two pounds, it buckles on easily, charges much like a cell phone, and is comfortable enough to be worn 24/7 (doing everything except showering).

The magic lies in its predictive detection algorithm:

  1. 0.2-Second Deployment: The belt distinguishes between normal daily movements—like sitting down or turning quickly—and an actual fall, deploying airbag pads around the waist just 0.2 seconds before impact.
  2. Impact Absorption: Upon contact with the floor, the airbags instantly inflate and then quickly begin to deflate. This rapid deflation absorbs the kinetic energy of the fall, preventing a “trampoline effect” that could cause rebound injuries to other parts of the body.
  3. High-Visibility Emergency Markers: The deployed pads feature bright green material so first responders can immediately assess the situation upon arrival.

Beyond Protection: A Personal Emergency System (PERS) & Data Insights

Smart Hip Guardian isn’t just physical armor—it doubles as a comprehensive Personal Emergency Response System (PERS). The device features a manual medical alert slide for non-fall health emergencies. When triggered (automatically by a fall or manually by the wearer), it contacts emergency services and alerts up to three designated caregivers via its companion app.

Furthermore, the technology captures a patented 6-minute data window—recording 3 minutes before the fall and 3 minutes after. Backed by an 18-month Dynamic Fall Study with the University of Pittsburgh Medical School and over 25,000 clinical tests, this “Fall Doctor” data provides actionable insights into the cause of the fall, allowing clinicians and families to prevent future occurrences.

Pricing & Healthcare Path

The product retails for $800 (which includes two belts, effectively $400 per belt) alongside a $39.95/month monitoring subscription. Currently registered as an FDA Class 1 device, Smart Hip Guardian is actively transitioning to FDA Class 2 status with the goal of securing CMS Medicare reimbursement coverage—a move that could drastically lower out-of-pocket costs for millions of seniors.
