A Hybrid Gaming Device

Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo and their associated game consoles were, as usual, center stage at this year’s premier gaming conference E3. PC gaming by one estimate and measure has a 20% market share and isn’t going away. As a proof-point, the Piston Console from Xi3 is the latest in a series of micro-mini PCs that are both compact (e.g. can bolt to the back of a monitor) and powerful.

In the above video interview, Whitney Merrifield speaks to the advantages of the micro-mini approach, as embodied in the Piston, compared to the traditional console approach. Some of the advantages of using a PC for gaming is its support of multiple monitors, virtual world (get a glimpse of the Ocular Virtual Reality headset displays in the above video), 4K graphics and the modularity allowing for hardware upgrades. To that point, the open nature of the PC allows gamers to implement new features (such as live broadcasting via open source, Open Broadcast Software), not otherwise available on consoles.

And the PC world isn’t lacking for titles, as there are aggregators, such as STEAM and Origin, as well as many independent and cutting-edge games that find their way to the PC before making their way to the console. Plus, at the end of the day, one can still use a PC for things besides gaming; what a concept.
