Akimbo Review

This is an updated review of the Akimbo video service. It is an update from the Aug 2005 review for Viodi View… by Roger Bindl.

And here’s the original review from August 2005… it highlights a few other points, so still worth a look, and gives perspective from days before the xTube.

    Akimbo-
    This was good, thx!
    Rating = 9 (assume 1 is low?)
    I didn’t hear what type of internet connection was required, dialup, wireless, broadband – or comments on BB speed of download for each or how long in minumtes(which of course will vary with the BB type.)

    Since this is an IPTV Telco centric site, how does the IOC make money off of this? Complementary or competitive?

    Thanks for the questions Terry… I wanted to say more in review, but felt judging if I went too far; My reference to the drive home was a hint, the post office a supporting point, and overall a hint at partnerships.

    Many video’s from Akimbo are very good quality, so the download must be broadband. I have 1.5MB download, and a feature movie took around 1-2 hours. I believe the speed is more dependent on Akimbo’s server load, and of course the network in between.

    The download speed is a point for complementing or augmenting IPTV. I believe there are opportunities for Telco’s to engage with Akimbo and consider peer support networks for packaging video offerings with base DSL and FTTH (pre-IPTV). It’s a good way to enter the video arena with minimal costs and effort, yet prepare for a future where over the top services could lead to. I also see it as an augmentation to IPTV where VOD isn’t offered yet (or perhaps is offered, but the option is appealing).

    I’ve heard several telco’s talk about partnering with over the top service providers as important, so many recognize a need. This is an area breaking Moore’s law on a daily basis – thus my reference to dog years (7 in 1). High quality video is being offered on the Net, and Akimbo is just one with a interesting service providing it. They also offer HD but its close to postal pace for full length movie. Just hold on though as service providers are jumping to 6MB, and 10MB, and even 50MB if you go west far enough.

    Akimbo is working on integration with IPTV set tops already, and some of the leading access equipment vendors; It’s just not well publicized yet, but it’s happening.

    Roger
