Those with concerns about the potential for redlining as Google builds its fiber networks, should listen to this interview with KC Digital Drive’s Managing Director, Aaron Deacon. KC Digital Drive is public-private partnership that was a vision of the respective mayors of Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri. The intent of the organization is to drive usage of broadband and improve the local economic base, particularly in those areas where some of the population might not have the money, ability or desire to participate as in the digital world.
A nascent operation, Deacon describes some of his organization’s early work, including one potential application they have demonstrated whereby a person can check out software (e.g. video editing software) from a virtual library/virtual PC, navigate it via a browser on a low-cost client computer and have performance superior to a traditional desktop experience. This sort of cloud experience only works with the bandwidth provided by an all-fiber network.
