Nostalgic after all these years

Is it possible to be nostalgic, for the past, in only three years? Perhaps… when those three years were a bit rapid, radical, and rewarding. The videos below, from Viodi View in 2006, reminded me just how much the video world has changed over the past three years. I became nostalgic.

Above is a sample of how Ken and I were posting ViodiTV videos back in 2006. YouTube had been around for about a year, and would be acquired by Google later that year. Ken and I had been posting video's since 2005, and more so since March of 2006 with the Content Pavilion at TelecomNEXT, and we were understanding the benefits and pitfalls of streaming video. It was great to have control over our videos, but streaming and storage were expensive, and sites like YouTube, Revver, BlipTV, and Brightcove were better connected to the CDN's (Content Distribution Networks) than our hosting services, so it was tough to say no to free bandwidth and storage with better streaming – thus the story begins as we progressed from 320×240 low bitrate video to HD video in less than 3 years.

So yes, I am notalgic today as I stumbled into these "old" video's. I was looking back to create a video to highlight the scope and depth of what we have done with ViodiTV. Instead I realized how amazing the distribution and availability of video has progressed in 3 short years. Today  I'm more concerned about free-riding aggregators than streaming video, and I'm nostalgic for a time past by… in a very short time.

This barely touches the surface of what's to come in the next 3 years, so I'm excited to think what we'll be doing then. By the way, check our updated Product Buzz for a fuller list of educational and promotional video's we produced over the past few years.

ViodiTV @ MTA – Give Us Your Feedback

Help us program ViodiTV @ MTA over the next couple of days.  Post comments and give us feedback below.  After the show, please continue to watch as we add videos online.  Here are some picture highlights from the show shot with my G1 phone.

Some things we learned and relearned from doing this show (not in any particular order):

  1. Pine Island Telephone and Spring Grove Communications are two different entities.  In one of my introductions, I incorrectly identified the owner of the pole setting truck to be "Pine Grove Telephone."
  2. White screens will cause interference in the audio subcarrier, if the depth of modulation is not properly adjusted.  The staff with the hotel were very responsive and fixed the problem soon after we reported (thanks).
  3. We need to make sure we include promotional literature at the registration desk, within the packets and in the opening sessions to let people know ViodiTV is on the hotel channels.
  4. Need to add a ViodiTV microphone flag.

Video and TV over the Net – Part 2 of a Series – Vudu

Video and Television over the Internet are accelerating faster than Kurzweil’s Law – a bit faster than Moore’s Law I think. This review demonstrates another service for VOD over the Internet and to the television. It keeps getting better when you compared to my earlier reviews on a similar service. Take a look at this video to learn about Vudu’s Television VOD (Video on Demand) over the Internet. Also see Part 1 of Series.

ViodiTV @ MTA 2008

The above video provides highlights of the ViodiTV coverage of MTA – the Minnesota Telecom Alliance’s 2008 Convention in Minneapolis.   Viodi provided approximately 30 minutes of daily video coverage over the course of the convention that aired on cable channels within the MTA Convention’s host hotels.  This video reflects the MTA Convention theme of the operators’ challenge of having to juggle competitiveness, convergence, and consolidation.

"The Face of OPASTCO"

In this brief video, John Rose discusses the importance of broadband to the members of OPASTCO and their customers.  In his comments at the OPASTCO conference, Rose suggested that there probably would not be much near-term movement on USF and Inter-carrier Compensation policy.  He emphasized the need for educating Congress on the importance of broadband to rural America.

He stressed that an often-overlooked aspect of broadband is that it is a moving target.  That is, although OPASTCO members have done a yeoman job of bringing broadband to north of 90% of their customers, the bandwidth needs are rapidly changing.  As a result, the operators’ investment in the network is never ending.

The investment in networks and back offices are huge and OPASTCO is forming strategic relationships with companies, such as Microsoft, that can help its members reduce costs and add value-added features to add value to the broadband pipe.  He pointed out that OPASTCO’s customers are competing with companies in India and China.  He talked about the important role that OPASTCO has in helping rural communities remain competitive.

Everyone Sells

Brought to you by Innovative Systems

David Saxby of Measure-X discusses the importance of creating a culture whereby everyone in an independent telco feels comfortable “selling” the company’s offerings. He explains that selling is a learned skill that requires coaching and some form of extra compensation. Saxby is going to be speaking at OPASTCO’s 2008 Winter Conference in Phoenix. This particular video was filmed at the Innovative User’s Group meeting in August, 2007.

Watch us at OPASTCO on Channel 39 – January 13-16, 2008.

21st Century Technology Etiquette

Two years ago, we opened the New Year with a review of the book, Talk to the Hand.  This book looked at the increasing coarseness in today’s society.  Although not necessarily the intent, this book gave some good ideas as to ways telecom companies could improve customer service.

Along these same lines, we kick off this year with some great advice from the granddaughter of the Queen of Etiquette, Emily Post.  In this brief video, Anna Post gives tips on the proper use of email, instant messaging, speaker phones, video conferencing and new technologies in general.  Feel free to pass this video along, as she has some common-sense ideas on the proper use of these relatively new communication methods.
