Ken Pyle interviews Donovan Prostrollo of Calix regarding opportunities for independent telcos with over the top video.  Donovan had talked on this topic earlier in the day before a standing room only session.  This is especially timely given this week’s commercial launch of Hulu, the opening of YouTube’s APIs and the TiVo’s announcement that YouTube will be integrated into their broadband-enabled DVRS.  This was filmed at Calix’s studio at MTA’s 2008 Convention held during the first week of March.

The following full-length episode of the Office is an example of what web sites can do with NBC Universal/Fox’s new online video service, Hulu. Hulu is an online video destination site, which includes current, such as the Office, and classic television series, such as the Bob Newhart show. Some interesting features of this site include (continues below video):

  • Content from Hulu may be embedded in 3rd party sites (as is the case here)
  • The site features both clips and full episodes
  • Users may create their own clips and send them to their friends

This particular episode should be amusing to independent telcos that are thinking about or are currently involved in local ad production.

Another feature of Hulu is that viewers may create clips from full length episodes of their favorite shows and either email or embed them on their web sites.  Alternatively, viewers may select from clips on the Hulu site. It is not clear whether the clips on the web site are user generated or from Hulu.  It is fairly simple to create a clip, although the editing process could be a little easier.  The following is an example of a viewer-generated clip.
