John Rose, president of OPASTCO, felt that he had to, “Walk the walk,” and show by example the sort of world that is available today to the customers of the Telcos. With the help of his son-in-law, Rose created a home entertainment and communications network that allowed him to cut the cord from all but his broadband provider.
While not for the technical-neophyte, Rose’s idea of getting services via over the top methods will be commonplace in the not-too-distant future. Watch this video to see John’s suggestion for how a Telco can simplify the Over the Top experience for the customer and return to a world where a telco is involved in the sale and service of CPE.

Riordan suggests some innovative uses of femtocells, including as a sort of location detection device to remind teenagers to do their chores and homework when they arrive home from school. Beyond improving signal quality, femtocells could facilitate personalized advertisements. Riordan also discusses how femtocells combined with an IP backbone can extend wireless into applications for 1/10 the price of traditional methods. Highlights include Wisconsin Senator Kedzie, Dave Burstein, James Costello, Sheri Thorsbakken, Steven Ross, Dave McClure, George Heenan, Dr. Edna DeVries, Don Beebe, and Bill Esbeck with several 100 year awards.
The biggest news from day one of the Minnesota Telecom Alliance’s 99th Annual Convention is the Minnesota Telecom Alliance (MTA). By unanimous votes of their respective memberships, the MTA and MART (Minnesota Association for Rural Telecom) agreed yesterday morning to merge into a combined organization that will retain the MTA moniker. This is significant for several reasons, as their merger reflects the ongoing industry consolidation of independent telcos. In this brief video, we interview the current President/CEO of MART and the soon-to-be President of the new MTA.
The catalyst for bringing these organizations together was the departure of a large member company from MTA. This merger is fundamentally not about cost savings, but providing better service for the independent telco members. Mike Nowick, the current President of MTA, will be responsible for Membership Services for the new organization. And yes, the MTA convention will continue to be of significant national and regional importance.
