John McDevitt of HSN Shop by Remote discusses how their interactive application that allows people to order items through their cable remote control is increasing the conversion of viewers to buyers. He talks about what they learn including the idea that speed matters more than fancy graphics. He also provides some very open advice to new entrants to the video distribution business.

This particular interview makes a good complement to the panel I was honored to moderate at the CableNEXT conference. The title of the panel was something along the lines of what will it take to creat a Cable Megastore. McDevitt’s comments reflect what the panelists said, as well as what the representative from the Disney Travel on Demand channel said.
