Cloud Browsing

“People don’t like to be locked in,” said Karl Mattson vice president and general manager of Maxthon. Mattson was referring to the idea that users want their data to be decoupled from their devices. In the above interview, he describes Maxthon’s cloud-based browser that allows data to follow the user, regardless of device or underlying operating system.

Maxthon was featured in an article in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal regarding the reinvention of the browser and how services, such as file sharing, are being integrated into the browsing experience. In this interview, Madsen explains what he means by cloud browsing and how their WebKit based browser now has more than 120 million monthly users.

A big part of Maxthon’s strategy is to work as an OEM, enabling others to private label and customize and optimize the underlying browser for their customer base. One such example, cited in the Wall Street Journal article, was Maxthon’s deal with Pioneer Electronics to enable web browsing on in-car touch-screens.

For service providers, the Maxthon cloud-based browsing approach could allow some interesting integration opportunities with services like VoIP, file sharing and video into a shell customized with the operator’s branding. Licensing the Maxthon cloud technology could allow for local cloud implementations for a very fast browsing experience, with personalized content stored in local data centers.
