Disruption in the Smart Home

It’s just getting started, but there already many alternatives for the consumer to create a smart home experience. Tom Kerber of Parks Associates points out that many of the smart home developments shown at International CES are from upstart companies that have devices and don’t necessarily rely on the service revenue. An an example, he mentions a connected oven that includes a full audio and video system. He calls it a very exciting time, in terms of new product introduction.

It’s just getting started but, there is alre3ady resistance to smart meters building. A woman in Alaska, has been arrested for not allowing one on her property, a woman in Illinois is in the same boat, a handicapped woman in Ohio had her power cut off in freezing cold for refusing the installation, 2 mothers in Naperville, Illinois were also arrested for refusing them. Google people refusing smart meters and you will 2.2 million results. https://www.google.com/search?q=Woman+refuses+smart+meter+in+alaska&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=com.yahoo:en-US:official&client=firefox

Thanks Emmett for the comment. Interesting articles in the search link you provide. Each state is unique with each Public Utilities Commission providing their own rules. Whether RF emissions from smart meters actually impact devices seems questionable at best.

Still, it is interesting how start-ups and established companies are looking at ways that bypass the utilities and others regarding the use of the metadata that will help drive efficiency. I will soon publish the video interview with Whirlpool and their WiFi-enabled washer; no service provider or utility interaction needed to be more energy efficient.
