Fiber to the Gas Station

Selling pickaxes to miners is one way to cash in on a gold rush. In the modern-day gold rush that is the Bakken oil fields of North Dakota, existing businesses and new businesses are booming thanks to the oil drilling frenzy (some estimate 2,000 wells will be drilled this year). One of the big challenges the existing businesses face is finding staff and, thus, being more efficient with their existing resources is especially important.

Paul Schlichting, manager of the Garrison, ND Cenex service station, explains how a direct fiber optic connection has been critical for dealing with the increase in business and the growth in traffic and new customers. Benefits of the fiber to the service station solution provided by independent broadband operator, Reservation Telephone, includes decreased credit card transaction time, improved security and increased utility by providing high-speed Internet and video. More than a gas station, this facility, which is part of a cooperative, is a meeting place for and a bedrock of the community.

I didn’t want to confuse this post with these interesting tidbits, but, according to a public television documentary I saw when I was in North Dakota last week, one service station sold $100k in tire chains last year.

An anecdote I heard on the plane from a guy whose trucking company has gone from one big rig to 45 in 2 years, suggested that another service station in the middle of the Bakken is selling a $1M worth of pizza. At $5 per pizza that would be 200k pizzas per year from one service station that was in the middle of nowhere and is now in middle of an energy rush.

The point is that the area is booming and one sees the growth everywhere; from new housing to traffic to billboards looking for workers. It is a refreshing change from other parts of the country where the economy remains sluggish.

Still, with growth, there are challenges, such as the people who are priced out of their rental housing.

Interestingly, this particular service station is a bridge between the old community and the new. Clearly, it is participating directly from the increase in traffic. As a cooperative, it is part of the community. It even has a “free meeting room” for things such as parties, business meetings or showers.
