Digital Logistics Suppliers for the World

“Incredible change…more in the last 10 years than the earlier 100 years”, is how Geoff Hollingworth of Ericsson characterizes the impact of technology on society. As an interesting proof-point, Hollingworth’s son makes an appearance talking about the high expectations that the customers of tomorrow have. Companies will need to transform their businesses in order to meet these expectations.

Hollingworth suggests that it will be imperative for organizations to understand their core business. In the case of service providers, particularly mobile operators, one way to look at their business as “Digital logistics suppliers for the world.” Making sure content arrives in a secure and reliable way will be increasingly important, says Hollingworth. As he suggests, our lives will depend upon reliable networks.

Ken, good interview! I do see one of the roles for mobile operators as “Digital logistics suppliers for the world” but Mr. Hollingworth does not explain how they can monetize their services for logistics. In my startup (multi-physics simulation software company), we have not produced & shipped CD’s at all; software is downloaded. Something tells me that the savings in shipping costs has not had a 1-to-1 increase in digital delivery revenues for the mobile operators or even wired ones.

MP, thanks for viewing and for the comment. I think you are right that it will be/has been challenging for the operators to take advantage of their position as the delivey pipe to actually monetize their position as “Digital Logistics Suppliers”. It seems like the OTT entities have the band advantage with their customers. I am thinking that business-to-business applications (e.g. operation of private clouds) may be where the operators will tend to have a competitive advantage.
