2012 State of the Fiber

What is the state of the awareness of broadband and Fiber to the Home among Multi Tenant Unit owners? This is a question that Michael Render of RVA answers as part of a study Broadband Communities commissioned for the 2012.  Render suggests that advanced broadband services are desired, but the level of interest varies by the type and location of property.  He suggests there is an opportunity to educate owner and tenants with regards to broadband.

He also talks more broadly about Fiber to the Home and some of RVA’s recent findings.  He says that 12 to 14% of FTTH customers have home businesses.  These businesses average $55k average annual income, the majority of which is derived outside the community.  He suggests on order of $500k in economic impact for every 1,000 homes passed by FTTH networks.  Speed and reliability are other advantages he cites with a cost per megabit for FTTH being approximately $2.91 versus about $17 for some of the slower services.

With 8 million homes connected out of approximately 19M homes marketed to and with completion of stimulus projects, growth continues for FTTH.
