Brightcove 3 and Contextual Publishing

The keywords from Brightcove appear to be “contextual publishing,” “branding”, and “integration to ad networks”.

Brightcove, with the release of Brightcove 3, is making a switch to paid subscriptions but also working to help publishers generate revenue. They’ve done that by creating media API’s for better integration of video and text into websites – or Contextual Publishing – along with ad server integration.

Contextual Publishing is about integrating text, ads, and interaction around video. This provides publisher with more control, abilities to brand, viewer commenting, and more viewer time on your pages and site. In the end, this should mean more traffic, ad viewing, and ad revenue.

Brightcove’s integration with ad servers like Tremor Media’s Acudeo platform should help with monetizing, plus offer a more seamless and simplified package for ad insertion. This includes advertisers, insertion, scheduling the ads, and making money from your video’s.

Brightcove has several high-profile customers including HBO, AMC, National Geographic, and more… myLifetime, Sun, and the NY Times were highlighted in their recent webinar on branding and advertising.

We tested Brightcove in the beta phase on ViodiTV and it does work slick for managing assets, generating meta-data, creating channels with channel lineups, and then especially for customizing and branding players. The reports were okay, but nothing to write home about.

But alas the question is, as a small company (like Viodi or Independent Telco’s) can you make money from it, or at least break even. That remains to be seen, but Tremor Media seem to think you could with 50-100k streams per month. Perhaps there is a means for the Viodi mission of bringing Hollywood to the Heartland… A new consortium in the building? Hmm.
